GIS5050: Module 5 - Spatial Analysis Lab

This weeks lab focused on working with lat/long and DMS, creating and projecting X,Y data, preparing Excel data for GIS use, creating a web address locator, conducting address matching, and resolving geocoding issues. I was very nervous about future projects because I knew that the shape files would not always be given to me. After this lab I more so understand how shape files and feature classes are created and used by professionals.

Using Excel to prepare our data for the project was very useful to me because my biggest question is how I will collect my own data in the future. Downloading information from the Florida Department of Education and The US Census Bureau was a great key learning element. I have relatively 0 experience working with excel so the beginning of this lab was a challenge at first but after completing the lab I feel confident I can prepare future data and use excel for future projects. This lab was the first time I really felt comfortable completing the tasks we are asked to do without instructions and using the geoprocessing tools, data exporting, selecting by attributes, and making a web map. Setting up the address locator was a new skill, and it is one I think is very useful and will be a tool I use in many future projects. Using the address locator tool was not very different from any other geoprocessing tools. Mostly the default selections can be used. Matching addresses was very challenging however and took me a while to figure out. It was interesting using google earth to find my bearings and navigate to the unmatched addresses. The only problem I ran into was that one school was under construction and not open yet. I had to find the construction zone to match its address. The skills I practiced and learned in this lab were very important and will help me overall in improving my GIS proficiency.
